Eagle over Chequamegon Bay

I am the Eagle,I live in high country,The rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky.

I am the Hawk,And there's blood on my feathers,But time is still turning,They soon will be dry.And all those who see me,And all who believe in me,Share in the freedom I feel when I fly!

Come dance with the west wind,And touch on the mountain tops,Sail over the canyons,And up to the stars. And reach for the heavens,And hope for the future,And all that we can be,Not just what we are... John Denver.

Spring in the Region means BEARS!

Spring is a exciting time in the Lake Superior Region and the young cubs are learning to cope with things. Like climbing trees. Some Bear Sows have a great deal of cubs. The Blueberries are coming soon and if you know a good spot for them you might spot a bear. When picking them yourself make some noise! You never want to upset a mother bear.

A Time past on Bearskin

This character is proudly standing in front of a Gunflint Trail cabin on East Bearskin Lake. His Grandfather built the cabin in the 1940’s and it’s still owned by a member of the family. The visit to the cabin brings back very fond memories of a time past. Car trips in the 1970’s to see Grandpa, fish with Grandpa and spend time with family. To recall these memories almost brings a tear to the eye because they were such good times. A more relaxed time when people had time to get together and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. I think we have lost that, to just sit and be, watch the lake and have a nice conversation while watching the loons. And there is no reception for the I-Phone.

Terry Fox Memorial

If you’re old enough like myself you will recall Terry Fox in the summer of 1980 running across Canada after losing a leg to cancer. It was a huge story on the US news and even bigger in Canada. He started in Newfoundland and made it as far as just east of Thunder Bay Ontario before cancer stopped him. He passed away the following year. In Thunder Bay is a memorial to Terry Fox with the Sleeping Giant Mountain behind him. I remember this story as if it was just yesterday. It made quite an impression.

From the Land of Sky Blue Waters.

If you are old enough this advertising campaign and jingle is stuck in your brain forever.

You might recall the cascading crystal clear water and the song "From the land of sky blue waters" Hamm's Beer.
One of the ads were filmed near the Gunflint trail at Little Rock Falls not far from the famous Gunflint Lodge.http://www.gunflint.com/

A Minnesota beer fresher then all the rest due to the sky blue waters was one of the most successful ads in history at the time for beer. At that time people believed most beers were all the same. This ad convinced them Hamm's was better due to where it was from. After all what could be more pure and clean then the North woods of Minnesota? The song:

Thanks to the visitor that mentioned these facts as his Grandfather built a cabin on the Gunflint Trail in the 1940's and he knows the history well.

Eagle Canyon

As mentioned by a visitor there is a parallel canyon to Ouimet Canyon. This one is privately owned and is a camping/RV area with a attraction that people that are afraid of heights might
want to avoid. It's the longest suspension bridge in Ontario. It is stunning and very exciting to walk across and there are hiking trails on each side of the canyon. I recall signing a wavier to cross it so we couldn't sue the owner in case of a accident. But of course it's more then safe. It's about 50 miles north of Thunder Bay Ont. near Dorion Ont. It's a bit off the beaten path but aren't the best things always?? These pictures don't do the place justice at all, it's very high up.
Thanks again to the visitor that brought this up!

Ouimet Canyon in Ontario.

North of Thunder Bay Ont. on the North Shore of Lake Superior is the Grand Canyon of Ontario.
Ouimet Canyon in May was very quiet with no tourists around yet. We had the view all to ourselves. The viewing platforms in Canada are called Pods. It is a beautiful area to visit.

This is part of the Lake Superior Circle Tour.

Honeymoon Bluff on the Gunflint Trail

North of Grand Marais Minnesota up the Gunflint Trail half way to Canada is a bluff that is called Honeymoon Bluff. You can climb to the top for a fantastic view of several Boundary Waters Lakes. If you Google Honeymoon Bluff on the Gunflint trail you can find more details. The entire Gunflint trail area is very interesting and you might also see a Moose!

Lutsen Ski Resort

On the North shore of Minnesota is Lutsen Ski Resort. It has a real ski resort feel to it.Not a ski hill but a mountain called Moose Mountain. In May there is even some small snow piles remaining. You take the tram to the top and get a incredible view of Lake Superior.
