Snow at last for the Northland. But not for all. Duluth Minnesota has none! Bayfield got 6-7 inches and the snowbelt of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan got plenty. Skiing in Lutsen would be good however as they have a nice base.

I spotted a ship headed for Thunder Bay Ont. during lunch today on the GM cam. They got some snow this holiday weekend and XC ski trails are open. Lutsen is in full operation as well. I wish I was there.

Ski Holiday in Yupperland

Took a big ski holiday with relatives in the U.P of Michigan. A bonus of a unplanned trip. I thought the last trips of the year had been taken and I'd not get to Michigan this fall. But last minute plans came up and you can't pass up on skiing in Michigan! The lodge was nice with many game mounts. Skis on the walls and ceilings. Not the largest in the U.P but certainly nice. I really enjoyed the place. Can anybody guess where this was? I'd be impressed if you did.

A few shots of Bentleyville in Duluth Minnesota. Each year they add more and more lights. It’s quite the attraction. Would be nice if it snowed before Christmas this year.The last shot is the daily fly over Satellite shot of Lake Superior Region. I love it when the lakes freeze in the Boundary Waters and you can see them clearly on the shot. The sheer volume of lakes is astounding to me. How did the Explorers of old find their way?Imagine the wilderness back then as right now it’s pretty incredible present day.

Meteorological winter begins

According to the weatherman winter has begun this week. Of course the official winter for most begins with the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year. Either way it's here and evidence can be seen in Lutsen Minnesota. The Mountaintop Restaurant has quite a view at the top of Moose Mountain. They make snow of course and they opened Thanksgiving weekend.
Lutsen Ski resort is really wonderful with many activities. Even just dining and sightseeing can be very enjoyable. The view from the Mountaintop Restaurant can be all the way to Michigan on a clear day. Skiing is the best in the Midwest with over 90 runs when fully open. Or you can simply ride to the top in the Tram and have a lunch with a fireplace. What a view! The daily satellite shot shows the snow and the frozen lakes on the Northshore.

Time is running out for the old Ore Dock.

Removal of the old Ore Dock in Ashland has begun this fall. It will be very odd to see it gone after all these years. It will take time to remove as it's a massive job. But it has started now and there is no turning back. It is the last Ore Dock from the days of Iron Ore. Once there were four massive docks and soon there will be none. It will be odd to see nothing sticking out into the Chequamegon Bay.

Stoney Point Surfing

Saturday on the North Shore a passing weather front brought some nice waves. The surfers come out at Stoney Point and a few around the Lester River. It has to be chilly even with the wet suit. They have a blog and notify each other when the surf is up and the weather forecast.Technology and Lake Superior surfing! The birch trees in November also look nice without their leaves. In the Split Rock,Gooseberry Falls area the stark white trees against the grey sky tells you it's November and snow is soon to follow.

North Shore Holiday Weekend

A cabin with a wood stove is always a bonus while watching movies after dinner.

On the way home we drove past Stoney Point as we knew surfers would be out.There was a huge break but the surfers didn't linger long and ran to cars to warm up. Red faces and cold feet.The wind chill had to be bad. We saw a few catch a wave or two.

Saturday night had some snow flurries but didn't amount to much at all. Looks like next week the winter may arrive as colder temps are in the forecast.

Shoppers were out in force this weekend. Downtown Grand Marais was busy. I go for the Sven and Ole's pizza for lunch. Ever have a Chicken and Wild Rice pizza? How about some Herring?

The Snowshoe Priest

As you travel up the North Shore of Minnesota right before you arrive at Tofte Mn. you come to a wayside and the Cross River. You can stop at the bridge and look at a nice waterfall and hike up the river a bit. But I'm guessing quite a few have no idea why it's called Cross River and that you can drive to the mouth of the river and see a Cross marker. Bishop Baraga made a crossing from Wisconsin with a open canoe and two Indian paddlers to render aid due to a epidemic. It's a miracle he made it considering how quickly Lake Superior can change. In the winter he would snowshoe to missions and was called the Snowshoe Priest.But the canoe Priest could apply in this case. So next time you arrive at the Cross River take a right toward the lake and check out the nice views and the marker. The mouth of the river is a nice spot in the summertime. These shots were taken on a wonderful August day. This weekend there is a storm warning and skiers are hoping for the first big snowfall of the new winter season.

I just can't let the fall go, it was perhaps the best in years. The number of blue clear sky days in October were very nice about peak time. The colors were just golden. Grand Marais Minnesota got a dusting of snow this week. Soon it's ski time but for now it's still great memories of leaves for me. That is a picture from Artist Point in Grand Marais, the Coast Guard station as the sun was going down. The light was just right in the golden hour. The bottom picture was taken on the Superior Hiking Trail near Caribou Lake. Just a fantastic day that I'll be thinking about for quite some time. It's hard to time peak color with a perfect blue day, getting away from work and other duties. When it all comes together it's simply wonderful.

If you dig just a bit you would be shocked all the events that have happened in the Twin Ports area. Matter of fact it would take a lifetime to read it all. It's that rich with history.

Cascade Lodge Lutsen Minnesota

The Cascade Lodge near Lutsen Minnesota is a 85 year old Lodge. There is a great deal of history related to these old lodges. Alot of nostalgia also. I really like the fact you can stay in these places and feel the history. Behind the lodge are cabins you can rent. Some as old as 1922.They have been restored nicely and the interior logs are really a nice visual treat. You feel like your in the North land when you sleep in a cabin. The smell of the fireplace and the sound of the nearby river is wonderful. It really is a old fashion holiday that someday won't be around anymore. Newer cabins or resorts just don't have the same feeling. A luxury condo at a resort just doesn't give the same touch. I don't want a hot tub or a mint on my pillow. But if you reserve your cabin or lodge room they do have a chocolate chip cookie option if you want some homemade cookies waiting for you. Check out the link below, it's a family lodge and even pets are allowed in some of the cabins. After a few days on the North shore you won't want to leave.

UFO in Grand Marais Mn?

At first viewing I thought there was a UFO over the Coast Guard Station in Grand Marias Minnesota. But at closer look I guess it's just raining and that is a rain drop on the lens of the LIVE CAM that is located on the Harbor Inn. There is a book out by the former owner of the Cascade Lodge and Blue Water Cafe called Downtown Grand Marais if you enjoy history. Eugene Glader is the author. So if you wonder what building was what before it is what it is today this is the book. Great photographs of Grand Marais long ago.

This weeks auroras

I got a view of a bit of the auroras but nothing vivid and the North land was mostly covered in cloud. But from a satellite we can clearly see the event. It's really a wonder to see in the shot.I would really love to be up on the border sometime when a major event occurs.

Grand Marais Mn. Sunset

It was a flawless fall weekend with clear skies and peak color. Nice meals and good hikes. We went to town for dinner but delayed dinner due to a lovely sunset. Dinner can wait, you don't often see this in our daily lives. And in the last picture all the sudden it's gone. The sunset and the fall week. But of course that is what makes it so good, it's precious. I'm already thinking about the next fall and what is to come. It was a summer of the North shore and Grand Marais this year. Never got around the other end of Lake Superior this summer but you can't do everything. I'm lucky to have done what I've done this year. And that is a great deal. Next trip to Lutsen might be to ski? Spring skiing in March? We shall see what comes in the New Year.

I just can't let fall go, the weather forecast is quite good for the last week of October and there is still some color. Mostly yellows and rust. A wonderful time to hike with a dog. Crunch goes the leaves under your feet. I forced a extra trip up the North shore this year. I'll never regret it as the weather and leaves were wonderful. I have over 300 pictures from the last trip alone. The picture of the leaf on the pine branch looks staged but it was not.

I was in Grand Marais for fall color week and that caused me to think of the past. Back in the 1980's we stayed at the Seawall Motel right on HWY 61 over looking the harbor. I wish it was never razed but it's gone. I found a old postcard of the motel.

The last stop on our fall color tour was at Palisade Head. It was a bit sad as we knew we were leaving the North Shore and heading back to a new work week and the routine. But ah we have our great memories and pictures. I never tire of the Palisades which are about 350 feet high and always a thrill to look down. Climbers were on their ropes and going down when we stopped.

Murals all around Grand Marais Minnesota

You can’t help but notice the big mural on the Beaver House in Grand Marais Mn. But if you look around a bit you will see others as well. There is the Edmond Fitzgerald on a wall and the Steamship America on a store. There are scenes painted here and there. Who did all of this was the question? I got back home and did a look up. A fellow in his early 80’s is the artist. But he doesn’t even think he is a artist, he just paints he says. People keep asking him to do more so he does. This fellow is Lyle Saethre of Grand Marais and he has lived there his entire life. He doesn’t want history to be lost so paints these scenes of the past. They are fantastic and I think everybody really enjoys them. I know we do.

There is an urgency to fall that I feel. Indian summer only lasts so long and anytime the sun is out and the leaves golden you know it’s not to last. It’s my favorite time of year and it goes so very fast. So we pretty much drove the wheels off the SUV last week to see all the vistas and country drives. Pictured is a vista above the Cascade River valley. You can make out the river in the middle of the frame. And County Road 14 above Grand Marais on the ridge was quite colorful. A nice drive with WTIP Community Radio on dial. Quite the mix of programs and music they play, all of which is interesting. Also a great way to know what is happening during your stay. Many choices of entertainment in the local restaurants. Folks singers and Bluegrass groups. Time a late dinner to the entertainment.

Pagami Creek Fire jumps the line

I will admit, I'm fascinated with these daily satellite shots. When it's clear you can see everything and I feel like a spy. You can see the maples still red on the ridges near Lake Superior and you can clearly see smoke rising from the Pagami Creek Fire. The high winds have caused the fire to jump the fire lines in certain areas. They are fighting it hard. You can clearly see the burn area on the shot. That is alot of landscape that burned. If you know your lakes you can see the old Hamm Lake fire burn on the shot just above Gunflint Lake also. It's brown in color. That was over three years ago I believe. Fall Color ride Lutsen Mountain Minnesota

Everybody and their dog (in some cases) were at Lutsen Mountains for fall color and a Gondola ride up Moose Mountain. A ride to the top and lunch at the Mountain top Chalet that was built just a few years ago to replace the older restaurant. It's quite a thrill to take the ride and the view all the way to Upper Michigan. We ate down below at Papa Charlie's restaurant at the bottom as it was less crowded. They have excellent burgers and sweet potato fries. And there is a deck facing Moose Mountain. I would guess when we left that the line for the Gondola was at least a 100 people deep if not more? It was quite the scene and my thoughts were there are more quiet places to see fall color. Perhaps we will be back for spring break and skiing in March!

White Sky Rock/Caribou Lake Minnesota

The trail up to the overlook at White Sky Rock. It was a golden climb with the leaves filtering the sun. Simply wonderful and great exercise on a rather steep grade but only about a 1/3 of a mile.

White Sky Rock overlook was just fantastic in full peak color. Maples galore. Minnesota nice was very apparent as everybody was very chatty and remarking what a view! White Sky is the name of a Indian chief that lived in the area of the lake. Caribou Lake is below the overlook and Lake Superior is in the distance. One lady at the top was near 80 years old. Anybody can get up there if you pace yourself. And what a pay off at the top. You just don't see this everyday.

Lookout Mountain, Lutsen Minnesota

Behind the Cascade Lodge in Lutsen Minnesota is Lookout Mountain. Eat a big breakfast at the Lodge restaurant and then burn it off hiking up to see the fall color. It was more then we had expected. On the way up thru birch and other trees it was all brown and yellow. We arrived at the top to find Maples in full red. Aspens and Birches in yellow and gold. It really was the big pay off for the hike up. Then down to the Cascade River valley to see the waterfalls and spawning Salmon. It really was a fall wonderland. Fall color week is just the best if you can time it.

The Pink Salmon were running strong upon our arrival at the river this past weekend. We were lucky to time our visit to see this at peak. Also the leaves were peak for Maples on the ridges.

The weather was glorious cool and sunny. Perfect weather for hiking the trails. More to come so

Peak Fall Color weekend on the NorthShore of MN.

This is reported to be a peak fall color weekend on Northshore of Minnesota. But perhaps could see some aurora colors as well? I sure hope so! Click on the links below to check for Northern Lights and Northern Leaf color reports. I'll be using my smart phone to do just that. Tonight the Aurora is active but it's a bit cloudy so not certain they can be seen? The weekend is forecasted to be clear and sunny. Cool hiking weather! Pagami Creek Fire and Fall Colors.

No visible plumes of smoke today on the daily satellite shot. You can clearly see the burn area on the map. 93,000 acres of it. If you look close on the ridges just above the lake you can see fall color. It should be just about peak this weekend in areas. This is important because I leave for a week of color hiking and touring in about two days. Good food, good hikes and colorful leaves. It's my most favorite time of the year. I've been thinking about it for two weeks.

The Pink Salmon have started the spawning run on some of the North Shore streams of Lake Superior. I missed seeing this last year by only a week. They have been reported on the Cascade River. I hadn't heard of Pink Salmon and was confused about what they were? Come to find out they are a exotic that was introduced to Lake Superior.

Also known as the 'Autumn Salmon', Pink Salmon are now running in the Temperance River. These fish were accidentally released into Lake Superior in the 1950's, and are now thriving in the lake. They spawn in the lake's tributaries in the fall, and die after spawning. Often, otters and birds of prey can be seen taking advantage of this all-you-can-eat salmon buffet. Look in the mouth of the Temperance River and the pools below the foot bridge for this Pacific exotic.

Pagami Creek Fire updated Satellite shots, Minnesota

It's the mop up time for the Pagami Creek fire, and it could take weeks. The updated number is 93,000 acres burned. Quite a huge area. You can clearly see the burn area on the close up shot that is circled on the map. Smoke was hardly noticeable today on the satellite shots. Last week I was amazed how much smoke it produced. The amount of work the firefighters are doing is incredible. Over 500 working right now getting the hot spots in rough country.

Pagami Creek Fire BWCAW Minnesota

I found another incredible satellite shot of the fire, this one from NASA. This was from last week when the fire was really blazing. The amount of smoke was huge. Yesterday the fire didn't grow despite the winds up to 25mph gusting. Today, Sunday there is rain in the area and that will aid the firefighters. There are 500 of them working on this fire. Conditions are so dry in the area that campfires are not allowed of course. The Arrowhead region of Minnesota is in drought.

Yesterday's cloudless satellite image showed a clear view of the burn area. The fire had calmed down a bit and firefighters are getting control. Concern however is that winds this weekend will kick up due to a approaching front. There are 500 firefighters on the job. Including the elite Hot Shots. We have seen these fellows on the news fighting huge western fires. They are the top guns of fire fighting. There have been close calls to date but nobody has been hurt or injured.Campers have escaped the fire and have stories of ash and embers flying over them. Sunday it's to rain which will aid the firefighters in containment.

Pagami Creek Fire BWCAW Minnesota

I really enjoy satellite shots from the daily fly over of the weather satellite. You can see the smoke from the Pagami Creek fire in these shots from the last two days. It has not advanced much more then 100,000 acres which it was at yesterday. But that is HUGE! The largest fire since 1918 I have read. The 40mph NW winds on Tuesday really had moved it further then they had expected it to go. Stories in the newspaper of campers being overtaken are quite scary to read. Folks hoping for the best with cabins in the area. It's a remote area and Hotshot firefighters canoed into the area. Helicopters drop equipment and water pumps. The elite firefighters are from Boise Idaho. I was talking about it today and a person said why don't they just put it out? I explained how remote it was, no roads! Helicopters and planes are used to do water drops. The story is getting coverage in the news in Milwaukee and Chicago for the only reason that they are affected. The smoke has come down due to the winds and people can smell it and even see the smoke. It has caused many to call fire departments in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Where is the fire?? It's in Minnesota? How far away?? What??? The fire was caused by lightning and I was near the Boundary Waters in a cabin the week when it happened.

Pagami Creek Fire

The smoke was heavy today blown by a strong NW wind. In Whitewater I could smell it.That is in Whitewater Wisconsin! Yes way down between Madison and Milwaukee! It was all haze and smoke today from the fire! The winds were just right to carry it that far where I was visiting somebody. Amazing! Miller Park in Milwaukee closed the roof for baseball due to smoke tonight.

Fall Brook Trout Spawning Run.

Two falls ago we were hiking in search of fall color in which to photograph. It was a wonderful fall and we were near peak color time. Hiking along a small stream we spotted something, brook trout! They were in spawn! We were thrilled as we had never seen this or been so lucky to be there at the right time. I put on my zoom lens and snapped these shots. Being very careful not to scare them away. They look bigger then they are with the zoom but you can see how pristine the water was in this wonderful unnamed stream. So now this is our secret place and we shall try to time another visit to the spawn this fall which is about to happen. For more information click on the link below:

Two types of color

Stream on the Northshore that is dry due to the lack of rain in the far north of Minnesota.

Tonight there are reports of Aurora up on the North shore. Wish I was there! This seems to be a active year for Northern lights. The other type of color from changing leaves is just beginning. There is just a hint of color on the ridges. Not much but a hint. Drought in the far northern part of the Arrowhead of Minnesota might cause the leaves to drop quickly there? Will see? I have a fall color tour planned and it's all timing. Last year I was just past peak.This year I hope to hit it right on the nose. But that is hard as there are so many factors that cause the timing to change slightly. It would be a double thrill to see the Aurora and the peak fall colors during the same week. Now that would be asking for alot but you never know?

Floatplane flips over on Devil Track Lake.
A floatplane taking off from Devil Track Lake flipped over on the east end of the lake on Saturday, August 27, resulting in substantial damage to the plane, but no injuries to the pilot or three passengers. The plane, a 1960 Cessna 182 fixed wing single-engine owned by Dan Anderson of Grand Marais was piloted by Mike Raymond of Grand Marais

Hopefully the plane can be restored to working order again. It's a very nice Moose Tour.

Good Harbor Bay Minnesota

Good Harbor Bay Minnesota just south of Grand Marais. This has been the summer of the North shore for me. Several trips up and down the shore. And there is still more to explore. You will never run out of places to visit between Duluth and Grand Portage. The fog was on the bay making it interesting. Rock hunters like the shores in this area. Thomsonite is one sought after rock. Agates another of course. I've never found either. I cheat and find them at the Beaver Bay rock shop.

Pigeon River, Minnesota/Canadian Border

Just before the Canadian Border on HWY 61 is the Pigeon River and the High Falls. Matter of fact the river is the border. The Visitor center there has been remodeled and the trails to the falls upgraded. It's a very easy walk to the falls and the viewing pods as they call them in Canada. Inuksuk marks the way

The Inuit used Inuksuks to make their way in the barren tundra. With no real landmarks it was the only way to find the path. Each August these seem to appear in great numbers on Artist Point at Grand Marais Mn.. They are always there in few but with the increase in vacationers they just explode in numbers on the point. A full August moon on the North Shore of Minnesota. Weather was clear and cool at night.
Perfect for moon viewing. This is the view from the cabin near Lutsen. What would be better in the evening? I typed in August Moon on Google and it came up with hundreds of Chinese restaurants and a few old songs. But to my surprise the moon in August is called the Sturgeon Moon. I would have never guessed that one. Next August 2012 we will have two full moons in August. The second is always called the Blue Moon.

Exciting events, food stands and a nice Parade on Sunday afternoon. This is the Fisherman's Picnic at Grand Marais. And of course you have to eat a Fish Burger at the stand. They sell hundreds of them over the three day event. The wood cutting events are the best to watch.

Another summer holiday at the Cascade Lodge again this summer! I feel lucky as that was unplanned and there was a opening. The location between Lutsen and Grand Marais Minnesota is ideal. I really enjoy the fact the Lodge is in the Cascade River State Park and you can hike from your door to the waterfalls. Pictured is the Lodge and you can't tell the water from the sky as it was just a picture perfect day. You can also rent cabins if you don't want to stay in the lodge. I really like the cabins near Cascade Creek. The sound of rushing water is very nice at night. And the bottom picture is one of the waterfalls of the Cascade River in the park. It's only a short hike from the Lodge. Hike all morning, get real hungry and have lunch in the Lodge restaurant overlooking Lake Superior. In the wintertime they have groomed XC Ski trails if you enjoy the other seasons as well.

Temperance River State Park on the North Shore is open again. In the hot weather people were taking advantage of swimming in the cool water. And some brave dudes were cliff jumping. It was a good drop as one kid said his feet really hurt from hitting the water. There as you can see was a zodiac in case somebody needed to be fished out. Still it's risky and I'd not do it. It has to be a 40 foot plus drop. Numerous people have died in this river just wading and being swept over the falls. There have been some very sad stories in recent years in this area. Best to just enjoy the views and the falls from the walkways.

It's high summer Festival time!

It’s high summer tourist season and festival time. It’s nonstop from here at Grand Marais Mn. It all begins with the Dragon Boat Festival this weekend, followed by the big Fisherman’s picnic and then the Rendezvous at Grand Portage. On the top picture is the quiet harbor which won’t be that way this weekend when those Dragon Boats get going.
A good vantage point is from the roof of the Gunflint Tavern in the second photo and my favorite place to stay is in the last photo. I really enjoy the old fashion family lodge with all the hiking trails and the Cascade stream and River for the waterfalls. I will be there for one of the festivals. I only wish I could do them all. I could park myself there all summer and never be bored. So much to do and see.

In Grand Marias Minnesota you can take a ride on a Cessna float plane and look for a moose. Not your everyday occurance at all. Flying alone in a Cessna is alot of fun,taking off and landing in a float plane is more exciting. The landscape of the Boundary Waters and Forest is a huge expanse.And there she is, a cow moose in a marshy pond digging around for aquadic plants for dinner. Yes that spot in the last picture is the moose from about 800 feet. I didn't have my zoom lens with me. But you get the idea. Sometimes in the afternoons Anderson Aero is at the Grand Marais harbor. Sky Dan is a nick name of course. Our pilot was his partner Mike. They know the spots for moose. What I really enjoy is seeing the entire area by air. What lakes I didn't know the pilot sure did of course. You really can cover the landscape in minutes. We were all the way up to the Brule River to the North at one point. Hikers know that river as you can hike to Devil's Kettle waterfall at Judge Magney State Park. The Naniboujou Lodge is there as well.

No Upper Michigan this summer. No Canada either. We had so much fun on the North shore we are going to go again next month and again in the fall. So much to do! So until next month I'm peaking at web cam during the day of the harbor in Grand Marais Mn. The Cascade Lodge just south of Grand Marais is a wonderful old lodge. The cabins next to Cascade Creek are great fun. Hiking in the stream bed, on the trails and over to the Cascade river for the waterfalls. The wildflower trail was very nice as the flowers were in bloom late this year. Hike and make yourself hungry for a nice dinner in town or at the lodge. Drive up the Gunflint trail for hiking up to bluff tops. Find your thrill on Blueberry Hill at Northern Lights lake. The girl in the bottom photo is named the girl who climbs lighthouses. This lighthouse is in Two Harbors Minnesota on the start of the drive up the coast from Duluth.

North Shore July Holiday

The Fourth of July week holiday up the North shore is over. The weather was fantastic. What is the North Shore without a stop in Grand Marais? Drinks on the top of the Gunflint Tavern,a walk out on Artist Point to the lighthouse and a stroll around town to the shops. The dining at the local restaurants is always a real treat. I like them all and wouldn't even rate them. Each has very good points. Breakfast at the Blue Water Cafe, dinner at the Gunflint Tavern or the Angry Trout. Lunch at the Crooked Spoon. The ice cream break at Sidney's over looking East Bay. The Java Moose is a favorite also while harbor watching. Walk the hiking trails just outside of town to work up a good appetite for dinner. Take a drive up the Gunflint trail and hike up a few overlooks. The list is endless! Even with the State shutdown there was more then plenty to do as access to trails and parks was still available in many places. Pictures above were taken on the run with a I-Phone. July Holiday week

When the weather is often the most warm inland I head for the North Shore of Minnesota.

The air will be fresh and cool near the lake. The forecast this year says so again. The Lupines are in bloom. The waterfalls are flowing nicely after last weeks rains. And I must take a paddle along the shore in the kayak. Of course there will be hiking and a few nice meals out in the areas fine restaurants. But best of all is the scenery and peace. The simple pleasures away from the daily routine and of course work. Work? What is that? I've forgotten it already. I'll think about it again in a few weeks. Perhaps? Or I'll still be day dreaming of the North Shore views on the coastline? I plan on seeing everything from Duluth to the border.

Summer is here when you see the float plane down at the harbor in Grand Marais.

The plane ride is offered by Sky Dan the pilot. He will fly you over the coastline and Boundary Waters lakes. Perhaps you might see a moose! I'll be up there next week and we are going to take a flight. It's been years since I've done this. Now is the time again. I'll be sure to take alot of pictures as I'm sure it's spectacular.

Just outside of Duluth as you approach the expressway to Two Harbors is Brighton Beach Road and what I still call Brighton Beach. But the sign says Gitche Gammi Park or Gumee? I think it's Gammi and it's the poet Longfellow that has us all saying Gummi with his Hiawatha poem. It's all very confusing to visitors I have in my car with me. There is a Kitchi Gammi club in Duluth that spells it with a K and so on. I don't know when the sign went up at the park but it's always going to be Brighton Beach to me. Either way it's a wonderful spot to take visitors to the area and see the waves hit the rocks. Kids just love the rocks and climbing all over them. While visiting recently somebody was getting married right there next to the lake.

Apostle Highlands Golf Course Bayfield Wisconsin

The view is incredible, call it a Pebble Beach like view. Not many golf courses in Wisconsin look down on the islands like this one does. I believe one in Door County Wisconsin is the only other golf course that compares. There are alot of hidden gems on the shores of Lake Superior.

Just north of Bayfield along the south shore is Little Sand Bay. There is a park service boat launch and and a small harbor. A few slips for boats and a excellent beach. The beaches on the south shore are very sandy and the water so clear. It was a fantastic blue clear day when we visited. You could see all the way to Minnesota's North Shore. There is a excellent campground and very nice facilities.

Chester Bowl Duluth Minnesota

Up on Skyline Drive above the Chester Park neighborhood in Duluth Minnesota is a real gem of a small neighborhood ski hill. Run by a small staff and volunteers it's a very nice community gathering place in the wintertime. It shocked me to see just how little they charge for lift tickets.

Imagine living in a neighborhood with your own ski hill nearby? That is winter Duluth style. A quality of life for winter sports lovers. And what do you do with all the old used rental skis? You don't want to toss them in a landfill. They aren't really worth anything or sought after. The answer is you make a art project out of them on the shed. It really turned out colorful and nice.

On May 7th volunteers attached them to the shed. More can be found on the ski hill website link below. Chester bowl is also home to some old ski jumps. Ski jumping was huge in Duluth back in the early days and Chester Bowl was the site of a National Competition once. I really can't imagine going off a ski jump of that size or any size for that matter.

What I really enjoy about the Lake Superior Region is it has awe inspiring history. You only need look around a bit and you start a complete story that you can research for hours. Spring makes me think of Skyline Drive above Duluth Minnesota. Hawk Ridge and the bird migration is something to do on the drive. Hundreds of birds migrate past in the early spring and again in the fall. The drive alone is simply wonderful way up above the city. The views of the lake are outstanding. The former mayor of Duluth knew this however and it was his dream and life goal to build the Skyline Parkway. Which he did over his entire life.

Samuel Frisby Snively (November 24, 1859 – November 7, 1952) was the mayor of Duluth, Minnesota from 1921–1937. His legacy as mayor will be largely remembered for the tremendous effort he put into the creation of numerous parks and boulevards throughout the city, particularly Seven Bridges Road and Skyline Parkway.

A fellow named Cook also saw the beauty of being up high and bought a piece of property up above the city. The lot had many cobbles and rocks all over it. What do you do with all of that? Build your house out of it that’s what you do! It is one of the most interesting houses on the Skyline Parkway I think.

But it doesn’t stop there, why was his lot all covered with these rocks anyway? That is a great deal of rocks? How did they all get there? Because during the time of the glacier the lake level was at the height of the Skyline Parkway. It was the shoreline and all those cobbles washed up on that ridge that is now the Parkway. That was the shoreline of what was then called Glacial Lake Duluth. Many hundreds of feet higher then today’s lake level.

All of this from a simple drive on Skyline Parkway in spring time. I need to drive up there again next weekend.

And thankfully we have these old postcards so we can see it all as it was back then.

I was so inspired by this satellite shot that I had to post it. Today was sunny this morning so there was a good clear shot of the Lake Superior Region. Yes that is ice on the Boundary Waters lakes of Minnesota. Part of Thunder Bay in Ont. still has ice as does Black Bay Ont. On the top of the Bayfield Peninsula that is snow and the Porcupine Mountains still have a spot of snow near the Lake of the Clouds. And over in the Huron Mts. there is snow as well. And the top of Mt. Brockway has snow at the top of that spine of the Keweenaw of the U.P. In the Penokee Mts near Mellon Wi. looks like snow also. Now I want to jump in the car and start touring the entire region. So much to do and see. Put everything on Craigslist and Ebay and just live in my car with my camera. How long would it take before it got old? I'm guessing alot longer then you would think.

Honeymoon Bluff

I was going to do a where is Waldo quiz here but I know folks would know this spot. A bit chilly this spring but that isn't stopping our spring touring of the Northshore. The climb up Honeymoon Bluff is short but steep. The view is outstanding of Hungry Jack Lake below a few hundred feet. And while up on top a small snow squall blew threw and told us that it's not quite spring in the region. We hiked around and worked up a appetite and went down to Grand Marais for Lunch. In the top picture you can just about see the snow coming in the distance. I have some fear that this summers tourist season might see the effects of high gasoline prices. I always like to see families with young kids on the Northshore having a good time. When hiking or touring the waterfalls it's always nice to see kids discovering the wonder of it all. Lake Superior waves and rocks however always seem to be the biggest draw.

Gooseberry Falls State Park Minnesota

My favorite stop during the spring run off as I enjoy a strong flowing waterfall. Gooseberry Falls has a very nice visitor center and paths to the falls that anybody can do with ease. If you stop in the springtime you can see Steel head fishermen in the river after their trophy fish. Even in the chilly wet day there were a good number of visitors. Artist Point Grand Marais Minnesota

Down on the water front in Grand Marais Minnesota is Bear Tree park. A nice waterfront park that is all landscaped and very nice. Local people have put a great deal of effort in making the park very nice. Benches and walkways have been added in recent years. It's very nice in the summertime to take a stroll after dinner at one of the restaurants nearby. In the background is Artist Point. If you look carefully it seems to have ice or snow piled up yet on the shoreline that is protected from the open lake. Spring is trying to make a effort but it takes time in the North.

Surfing USA Duluth Style!

Took a long weekend due to spring fever even if there was very little spring in the North land. But it turned out to be far more interesting then if the weather was nice. We had a gale with a strong northeast wind due to the massive low pressure system that brought all the tornadoes to the south. That wind blew in snow squalls and of course blew up some nice large waves on Lake Superior. After driving up to see the waterfalls we took the scenic drive from Two Harbors to Duluth along the shore. There they were, surfers just off of Stony Point. They were catching some large waves and getting into the curls. They had some nice rides due to the large waves. It made for a wonderful scene that only happens once and awhile in Duluth. There is a Duluth Surf Club and they put out alerts on their blog to tell others that the waves are good. According to their web site there are about 40 surfers in the Duluth area. Hard to beat the North Shore! The big waterfalls, weather, waves and surfers. And after all of that there are many places to eat on the way home. It's plain to see in the last picture why it's called Stony Point. Really interesting rocks. The spot is about 12 miles north of Duluth on scenic old HWY 61. If you're hungry there is the Lighthouse Restaurant, Nokomis and the New Scenic Cafe all within just a few miles of Stony Point. Eat and watch the lake out the window at the same time.

The remains of winter

All that is left of that 15 foot high snow dune on Canal Park beach is a dirty crude pile of snow.

That snowless blizzard had stacked the lake ice quite high and made a wonderful attraction. Duluth seems to always have something interesting going on or about to happen. Up on Hawk Ridge is the bird migration and I see tonight in the paper down at Bayfront Park Willie Nelson is going to come this summer. I wish I lived in Duluth!

The last of the old London Road Motels,Duluth Mn.

This week they razed the last of what I call the old London Road motels. Motels from the 50's and 60's. The Chalet was knocked down and I found it sad as it's a passing of a era. The era of the old motels that you drove right up to your door. They were called Motor Courts in the early days. London Road was called Motel Row in the 1950's as there were so many. The Chalet, the Lake Motel, The Lake Aire, The Viking and the Flamette Motel. Of course the Edgewater which is now the big waterpark Hotel. The old Edgewater is now gone also. All of this is making me just a bit sad because of all the good memories of trips to Duluth and staying in the motels. Some of the people that were on those trips with us are gone as well. It also makes me feel old to recall all of this. But it is really great history and Duluth is nothing but history. I only hope that somebody has saved that old London Manor sign that was under the Chalet Motel sign. That is really a old motel that once existed on London Road.

The bay is still frozen solid and fisherman are still on the ice. It's always a game to guess when the ice will go out on the bay. Often it's wind that takes it out overnight. You wake in the morning and take a look and it's all gone.

The Soo Locks open today and a new shipping season begins. With the exception of the bays, Lake Superior is open for business and ice free. Something that is Awe inspiring to me are the daily satellite shots of the lake. Just incredible shots when the clouds allow a clear view. You can imagine the places you have been from the air. Chequamegon Bay near Ashland is still frozen pretty solid. We were watching people still driving on it last weekend. They even race on the ice during the winters. Ice fishing is very popular on the bay there.

Yesterday the winds blew the broken up lake ice into the Duluth Shipping canal and waterfront. It's quite a attraction and interesting to see the power of Lake Superior in action. Spring in the region brings a little bit of everything. Almost a blizzard that just missed to the south.

Spring Creep

I've been reading and hearing about Spring Creep lately. Which sounds funny but simply means spring is coming earlier and earlier in recent years. Evidence is earlier breakup of ice and even Robins being spotted. The Duluth Shipping canal is all chunks of ice blown in by the wind. In Grand Marais on the cam I see somebody has their boat in tow with thoughts of fishing. All of this the first week of March. The ice road opened briefly in Bayfield Wisconsin but now is closed due to the warmer weather. The shipping season can't be far away now.

Get lost places on Lake Superior

Part of the reason I like Lake Superior Region is because you can get lost. Not really of course but nice to have that feeling of away and lost from the normal everyday. Remote places have a real feeling of freedom to them. Your removed from the daily concerns that just don't matter when your next to something huge like the lake. Or how about something huge like massive sand dunes that are over 150 feet high! Way up in the U.P of Michigan just west of Grand Marais Michigan are the Grand Sable Dunes. These dunes take your breath away and will if you choose to climb down and back up again. It's time to start thinking of summer adventures during the last of winter. Where will we get lost this summer?

History and a bite to eat.....

In Grand Marais Minnesota is a favorite place to dine. If you're looking for causal and good food this is the spot. Good view of the harbor as well. But it wasn't always called the Blue Water Cafe.
Back when it was called Dunord Cafe. Looks about the same as it did over 50 years ago! It's been the morning spot as long as folks can remember. Friends that had come in the 1960's still recall getting breakfast there. Good memories my friend tells me. They visited Grandpa's cabin on the Gunflint's East Bearskin Lake years ago. The family slides are priceless. It's a piece of history not only of the family but of the North shore as well. And speaking of the shore there was the Shore Theater right next door to the DuNord Cafe. It was the only theater north of Duluth in that time. It seated 200 people and opened in the 40's and the marque was removed in the early 1980's. The building is still there. And the last picture was my nice dinner at the Blue Water Cafe, the Rib eye was excellent. I was most pleased about it and frankly surprised at how good it was considering the bargain price. After running around all day on the shoreline and hiking in the woods what could be better?

Thankfully he will be fine and on display for many more years. He is a bit of history and it's fun to explain about him to people that are going up the North shore for the first time.

Seawall Motel Grand Marais, MN.

The last posting was of the waves breaking and freezing on the breakwater of Grand Marais. But of course it's also known as the Seawall. Thinking about this I recalled the Seawall Motel which was located right on Grand Marais Harbor. I recall staying there at least twice on trips up the Northshore and once during a Circle Tour of Lake Superior. I wish I had saved some matches

or a postcard as I often did. I know it was in the 1980's when we stayed there. I'm not certain when it stopped operating and was razed? Red Pine Realty has the vacant lot up for sale on their website listings. If you have a 1/2 million you can have the great view of the harbor.

I believe the motel was razed for a failed Condo project which was fought due to a height problem. But I can't find any past articles about this? I really miss these old motels that are disappearing all too fast. They have a real nostalgia about them even if they are considered rough by today's standards. Sure the new motels and Condos are luxury but do they have the same feel? I really don't think so. You parked your car at these Mom and Pop motels right in front of your door. I to this day really like that. Grand Marais is one of my most favorite spots on the North Shore of Lake Superior. It has that great vibe and feeling to it. And you can just walk all over the place. The best walk of all is on the Seawall to the Lighthouse after you eat.

The harbor breakwater had some waves breaking over it today making it very icy. Nothing like the huge waves that broke over it last October but still is impressive. The lake really is the boss.

In the top picture you can see more clearly the ice formed on the Seawall. It's a day later...

When the Bear Rolls over?

“Heikinpaiva” It means when the bear rolls over in the den. What it really means is that the bear is snoozing in his den, half-asleep,suddenly senses that the winter is half over.Time to roll over on the other side. Winter has passed very quickly it seems this year? The Heikinpaiva festival was in Hancock Michigan last weekend. A Finnish festival with all sorts of events. I saw the comment when the Bear rolls over in a Upper Michigan newspaper and thought that is a nice comment for winter half over. Happy for some and sad for others that want snow for skiing.

Delta Diner

Off the beaten path a bit just south of Iron River Wisconsin is the Delta Diner. It's a very busy place at lunch time even in the winter. It even looks nicer with snow surrounding the diner.
